Initial Idea Web
The graphic below represents my initial brainstorming on my unit. Items in bold, are those that I definitely hoped to pursue; items in italics, are those that I felt might be worth exploring. While I continued to reflect and replan throughout the design process, much of what is shown below remained evident in my completed unit.

Undertanding by Design: Backward Planning Template
Inspired by Tomlinson and McTighe (2006), I used the planning template shown below to identify my desired results, methods of assessment and the learning activities within my unit. By approaching the planning process in this way, I was able to ensure that I focued on what I hoped the students would learn, how I would know--and why I hoped they would learn it--before getting caught up in how.
